OBD TESTING
OVI TESTING
WHAT TEST DO I NEED?
Vehicles equipped with On-Board Diagnostics (OBD)—including 2013 and newer diesel engines and 2018 and newer alternative fuel engines—must complete an OBD scan as part of the Clean Truck Check program.
Our CARB-certified, credentialed testers connect directly to your vehicle’s onboard system using approved equipment to verify that emissions-related systems are functioning properly and meet compliance standards.

This digital process is fast, accurate, and required to maintain your vehicle’s compliance status.
Diesel vehicles 2012 and older that are not equipped with OBD systems are required to undergo a smoke opacity test along with a visual inspection of emissions control components—referred to as a Vehicle Emissions Control Equipment Inspection (OVI).
This process ensures your vehicle’s emissions systems are properly installed and operating within CARB standards.

Testing must be completed by a CARB credentialed tester to meet compliance requirements.
Your testing requirement depends primarily on your vehicle’s engine model year and fuel type:

-
2013+ diesel engines → OBD testing required
-
2012 and older diesel engines → Smoke opacity + visual inspection (OVI)
-
2018+ alternative fuel engines → OBD testing required
-
2017 and older alternative fuel engines → Visual inspection only

Additionally, compliance deadlines and testing frequency are determined by your vehicle’s registration (or VIN for out-of-state vehicles) and are managed through your CTC-VIS account. Click here create a CTC-VIS account.
